On Friday, February 10th, Chefs Mark and Sunny visited Mrs. LeMon's 4th grade class and Mrs. Battersby's 5th grade class. They brought with them an assortment of local apples – some green, some red, some round and some tall. Chef Sunny started the class with some fun apple facts. Did you know there are 7500 different varieties of apples? Some are sweet, some sour. Some are hard and crunchy and some are a little mushy. They originated in China. They were brought to the U.S. by the Pilgrims and later Johnny "Appleseed" planted them all over the North as far west as Illinois.
Mrs. LeMon's 4th graders made applesauce. They peeled and grated the apples. They added maple syrup and cinnamon and put everything in a pot. While waiting for the applesauce to cook down, Mrs. Lemon's class got to sample four different apples. After tasting granny smith, red delicious, gala, and honey crisp, the class voted on gala as the best tasting apple.
Then came the best part of class: Tasting. One boy in the class said, "Can we do this everyday?!"
Next, the chefs moved their "kitchen over to Mrs. Battersby's 5th grade class. Her class got to make mini apple cakes. The class was so eager to participate, everyone got a chance to grate, stir, measure and mix. Even Mrs. Battersby herself!
